Students shared their essays. Comment on the writer's strengths. Illustrate your comments with an example. Thanks to Jennie, James, Sideeq, and Kimthuy for sharing.

Monday we will write the Book Report essay. Bring in your thesis sentences, outlines, initial planning sheet, book of course, and if you like a rough draft of the essay, to revise in class. We will spend the entire class time writing the essay. Beware of plot summary. Also, make sure you devote a part of the introduction or conclusion to information about the author and their reason for writing the book. You can also use scholarly commentary on the author and the book. (I gave students a handout from the library which looks at COA resources on authors and books like Literary Criticism and Master Plots. These books are also in some public libraries and might be on-line at COA Library link. You can certainly ask the librarian for a copy).

Homework
Students will write a 2-3 page essay on their book. Presentations will begin on Wednesday. Tuesday we will talk about the Social Entrepreneur essays and for a free write look at a Frontline World Episode. I will also give students materials to find a Social Entrepreneur if students are still not sure who they want to profile.

Today in class I gave students a lot of handouts: graffic organizers, two handouts on developing thesis sentences: Topical Invention and 3-part thesis, a discourse on Introdcutions and Conclusions. In the second class we practiced developing thesis sentences using "Spare the Air Day" as a topic.

If you have not gotten Half the Sky to me, please email me this weekend a draft, so I can try to get back to you. Technically, we are finished with this essay.

Overall, the Half the Sky essays were good. Most students were able to revise their essays and bring up the grade in one revision, some two. I hope the next essay, Monday's will have a passing grade the first draft, since hopefully you like the book and its topic, since it was your choice.

The final essay should also be similar, that is, easier to write because the topic is your choice.

I liked James' essay, I felt that he used quotes to back up his examples and they worked well. I can't remember the exact quote but it was by Ghandi. It was when he was talking about the woman who got a loan because her husband wasn't working and the family needed money. Also when he talked about Obama I enjoyed that part, because its Obama I automatically listened. But overall I felt his essay and the examples he used worked well.

There were four esays read in class today and all were very descriptive and really identified the prblem. I particularly liked James' essay. The essay he wrote flowed well and he had a very good use of examples and especially the line about the President Barak Obama, really grabbed me, it was funny. Kim Trtan's essay was good as well.
Saddiq's essay was my favorite that was read. It was very vivid, and not only told what a problem was, but he actually gave a solution to get rid of the injustices. Though, the thought may have been a bit radical it was real, and seemed to be the only way to solve the problem. he was very clear and very vivid in his reasoning.
i can see that these essays were very well thought out and worked on. A few lacked a title, but they were very strong in content.

I really enjoyed all the essays read and appreciated the writer’s efforts. The essay that truly captured me was Saadiq’s. His style of writing and graphic nature of the events was gripping. The event that stood out to me the most was his introduction; he opened up with a domestic violent account, which grabbed my attention. Another example from his essay was the recount of a Half the Sky story, in this story a group of women rewarded a man violently for his physical abuse of a village woman. This was an example of a point Sadiq was making in repaying each violent action violently. Though I enjoyed the story telling of his essay, I strongly disagree with the idea of repaying evil acts through evil acts. I do believe every individual is accountable for every action.

I think everyone that read their essay did a great job. I particularly like Sideeq's essay. It was very powerful and the way he made his point come across was clever. I like how he incorporated the example of how he grew up into his essay. Overall I think all of those were very good.

I'm not gonna lie and pretend to enjoy a half dozen essay about this lame book. Congratulations to the people who completed the assignment is the best I can muster. Even William Shakespeare would epically fail, if he was given this assignment, and me as his audience, so don't take it personally.

"Call to arms", "educate a girl", "micro-loans","women overcoming hardships" "charity" and "AIDS".

My paper is way too long, spiced up with pictures, and having nothing to do with the terms above.

I enjoyed the essays that were shared, mainly Sadeeq's essay because you can relate to it. I remember one day Sadeeq and I were going over the novel in a group discussion and we both mentioned how we would never let someone do anything to our daughters without the going thru us first. On the other hand, James had a very nice essay as well. I enjoyed the quotes he threw inside the essay including Ghandi and Obama and I believe his essay was well-written.

Sadeeq's essay stood out the most outta of all the essays read in class. His feelings could be felt throughout his whole essay. You could feel that he embedded how he really felt about this tragic subject. The introduction was the best part to me because of the way he presented it and how much it related towards his audience.
