Response to class presentation:
James talked about the Disappearing Act by Terri McMillian. He told the class how great of a woman she is and how he admired her. She had stuggles in her life where she writes about in her book and also appeared on Oprah. David talks about How Stella Got Her Groove. It turns out that someone in his family actually knows the author which I think is really cool. Jennie talks about The Promise and about how she admires the author and hopes everyone reads the book also. I enjoyed her presentation. It was very detailed and she seems like she really enjoys the book! I presented with Kim Thuy and she explained a little background on Amy Tan and read a passage about the book. She also mentions that Tan's writing style is exploring the relationship between immigrant mothers and american daughters. Overall, I think everyone's presentation was great!

Comments on Jennie's book "The Promise":

I am really interested in reading this book after Jennie's presentation. It seems like such an inspiring story and even more so because it is real. Like Jennie said, the author seems like such a nice person and someone I would like to know. She gave the first graders something to aspire for instead of falling into that 30% who will not graduate high school. I'm sure a lot of high school students want to go to college but don't think it's achievable because either no one believes in them or they can't afford it. Ms. Brown gave them both of those things. The power she had in changing these kids' lives is amazing. People like her are very rare but make huge differences where it is desperately needed.

Response to Book Talks
James- Disappearing Act by Terri McMillan
I personally thought that James book sounded very interesting and I thought it was really cool how he actually knew Terii McMillan. Its funny because the passage he read to us, I’ve heard something similar from Black males that I know. I think James did a great job in finsding a connection with his author.
David-How Shella Got Her Groove Back by Terri Mcmillan
Just like James I thought that David’s book also sounded very interesting. I pretty much got a sense of the authors style of writing and I like how her stories are real and yet dramatical. David also did a great job presenting.
Lisa-The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
I really liked the way that Lisa was able to connect to the book using examples from her personal life. I’ve actually read the book before back in high school and I remember really liking it because it allowed me to see things from different perspectives. I think Lisa chose a great book to present on and did a good job presenting.

Book Report Reflection
The book I reported on was “Disappearing Act.” When presenting, as most people, I was extremely nervous. I really enjoy sharing my ideas of the book and capturing the ideology of the author. Terry McMillan is a very outstanding writer and woman, I meet her at the barber shop and we talked whenever we would see each other. Reflecting on my presentation experience it was pretty good, just talking about what I have been doing so that I can communicate my academia experience with my peers; this is a way to build relationships.

James and David both did a book by Terry McMillan and both gave good interpretations of the book. James read A Disappearing Act and he told how he had just run into her at a salon and started talking to her out of the blue, and was now reading her book for this project. David did his book presentation on How Stella Got her Groove Back, and shared how he had a form of family tie to her.

The Joy Luck club by Amy Tan. This book that was presented today and it caught my eye because in a sense it has some of the same ideas as my book. My book is also related to how first generation Chinese-Americans are trying to assimilate into this new world while their parents are trying to teach tradition from China. I liked how the book actually realated to the presenter.

Book Report Presentation

The book takes place in 1800’s, it’s about a young boy Hoi also known as Pie-Biter, the reason he was given that name is because he loved eating pie
Hoi is a Chinese immigrant who traveled to the US to work as a labor worker building railroads.
When he 1st started working he was a young skinny boy and later became strong and health.
As soon as the railroad was finished he started his own packing business and the business became really successful.
The theme is about the 1st Chinese laborers that made a big contribution on the railroads in America
The author of the book is Ruthanne Lum McCunn
She is Chinese and Scottish and born in San Francisco
She moved to Hong Kong where she was raised and received her k-12 education and for college move back to the US
She has written about 7 books and one of her books is also made into a film
THE MOON PEARL-which tells the story of young girls in nineteenth century China who fought and won a battle for economic and personal independence that changed the future for thousands of girls in China
The reason I think the author wrote Pie-Biter is because she wanted her young audience as well as her older audience to know the history of the Chinese labor works and the story of Hoi. This is actually a true story of Hoi and what he went through as a labor worker in the 1800’s.
What her books have in commend is that they have a lot of Chinese history involved in them besides the main story or topic of each book, which I found really interested and I liked
The reason I choose this book is because I started reading the moon pearl and keep researching books that she has written and over all the whole theme of Pie-Biter caught my attention, the draws and the detail of her written the book even though it is a short story.
And of course the fact that the story is a true story of Hoi.

Feed back of presentations

I really enjoyed everyone’s presentation today. The book at Juan Li presented was interesting. What caught my attention is the fact that the book had to do with bums from the bay area. I like the fact how Juan spoke how the dream of everyone that is in college is to get a degree and that by obtaining that one’s life will be impacted to a better and lead to nothing but good. It’s interesting that everyone say that obtain degrees one will always be better off, but that’s not always true. A bum could have a degree but things didn’t go good for him or her that they are bums now. Overall her presentation was good and everyone else’s was too.

Respond book presentation

Today, I am interesting about classmate book presentation. First, Cystal cotez, she explained about “Pie Biter” and “Moon Peral” by ruthe Ame, Mccum, which are 18th Chinese immigration history story. He is very brave. She read all book. I could understand this amazing story. This book’s picture helps my understanding. Second, Juan Li, she introduced “To Play the Fool” which is homeless person’s story. She said” Author compare with poor and rich, happy and unhappy, good weather and bad situation etc. I always met homeless person so I could understand about this situation. Rich got happy. I think it is not true. I chose second book why I think about my situation more philosophy style. The author may be sociologist woman.

Book Report Reflections

James discussed his book "Dissapearing Act" by Terry McMillan. He said the book focused on black couples and how they worked. It sounded like an interesting book to read. What I found cool was that he actually knew Terry personally, and would run into her on occasion. David read another book by Terry McMillan called " How Stella Got her Groover Back." Seeing this movie, I really enjoyed this story. It was about this woman who goes to Jamaica in search for a man. She was a middle-aged woman lookng for some fun. David, too, has some connection to personally knowing Terry. Jenny read " The Promise." This book, out of all of them really caught my attention. The book seemed like it was written from the heart. She discussed school, and how many dont make to graduation. Also, how black people tend to always get the shorter end of the stick. It seems like a personal view type of writing, which I enjoy. I'd really like to read this book, sounds good.

Today I enjoyed everybody’s presentation. I like the book James Barker reported the most. The book Disappearing Acts and the author of the book Terry McMilan captured my attention. Even though the story is fiction, it seems like characters are created well done. The story is like a real life. I think I will take a look at that book soon when I have more time. Overall book report was a good assignment to do, I really like it.

The book my partner Andrew and i presented was "Thre Cups of Tea". It is about a mountain hiker named Greg Mortenson, who decides to put a necklace in honor of his sister. He ends up biulding schools which is even better than leaving necklace on the top of the mountain. Mortenson also built a bridge for the villagers and keep on making schools for girls. Not only kids but women also learn to write and read. I chose this book because my friend told me about it.

Every one did a great job of presenting their report. I liked Crystal Cortez's Presentation, because her story was really nice and clear. I am looking forward to read her book.

The Presentations for half the Sky

The Presentations that were done about Half the Sky were interesting. I feel like Sideeq essay even though he wasn’t their to present was really nice he made a song/poem in the beginning that relates to the point about women and relates to the book. That really catches the audience attention. James also had a nice presentation of his essay. The thought and effort he explained. Also Jennie and kimthuy explained in details specifically about empowerment.

I enjoyed all my classmates’ presentation very much. No surprise, James was so good with his “Disappearing Act,” and writer Terry McMillan is the one I really want to read her book. Second day, Sabah and Abtisam are both came with their books by Terry McMillan caught me. I tell myself the first book for this summer must pick Terry McMillan. I also like Ahu’s presentation with a book about Art. Presentation Book Report
I really like Jennie's presentation about the book "The Promise". The author is a admirable person to me; she has a big love to children, and she even sacrifice her personal happiness to help children. I hope that people like her will have a happy life, for a Vietnamese proverb says that what you give out, you will get them back.

Book Report

The book that I chose to write is The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan. This book is about differences between Chinese immigrant mothers and their native born daughters such as language, culture, life viewpoint. These differences cause miscommunication between them. I chose this book to write for the assignment, for I am an immigrant, and stories in this book reflex my life. Also, this book brings meaningful lessons to immigrant families to avoid family relationship conflicts

Book Presentations

The second day of book report presentations went well and it was humorous that three students did the same book. I thoroughly enjoyed the duet presentation of "A Piece of Cake" with Edith and Julian, it had an element of humor which was a way of offsetting the seriousness and gloom of the book. Veronica showed enthusiasm when speaking about her book even though she commented that it was only "alright." I always enjoy hearing about "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" which was an entertaining movie. It was also nice to learn that there was some reflection of the book on the real life relationship of Terry McMillan. Overall I thought the presentations were great and I just hoped I taught the class a little something new about Maya Angelou who is a very decorated and well known author, writer, director, and so much more.

The reason I chose The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts was because of the strong connection towards the particular;ar themes that Ms. Sabir has introduced in the class. It connects with the issue of empowering women and the issues that many women face when encountering a new land. It explores traditions that continue to disempower women and in particular Chinese women.

I really only heard and remembered one speech. That person that did that particular speech was john. The reason why I remembered it was because we have the same book. Overall he had a really good presentation. He spoke really well, and he had alot of content in his information. I pretty much enjoyed his speech. He basically said that the book was I Know why the Caged Bird Sings. it is about the life of Maya Angelou. Angelou is a nice woman who has a hard time growing up. Her parents left her when she was young, and she feels abandoned for that. She is made for of by everyone she knows. She loves books. she gets raped and stop talking for a long time. during this time she become a writer. at the end of the book, we see her as a confident strong women.
