Group Exercise 1

In No Name Woman, Maxine Hong Kingston was told a forbidden story of her "nonexistent" aunt that committed adultery. The reason she was told this story was because she was becoming a woman and in their culture it's important to uphold the family name. After she was told the story she was left clueless and distraught that the ghost of her aunt haunts her.

Summarizing essay #1 How to tame a wild tongue

In the essay, how to tame a wild tongue, by Gloria Anzaldua, a migrant worker who became a school teacher and well known Chicano scholar. Throughout her whole life, she has been threatened to get her tongue ripped out because she talks too much. In America, there is a huge focus on naturalization and becoming “American”. She never truly fit in as American or as a Mexican woman because she didn’t speak either language purely. Such a huge part of her native culture is that women are subservient to men. In America this lead her to be such a strong feminist. Gloria overcame many barriers when people were always trying to bring her down.

Group Exercise 1
On Being A Cripple

Nancy Mairs writes an article on what it's like to be a cripple with multiple sclerosis. She talks about her self a bit with the bands she likes such as CCR and Cream, as well as how she hates being called "diffently abled" and would rather be identified as a crippled. The left side of her body is very weak and lives with a blurred spot in her eye. She walks with the aid of a walker or uses an Amigo. She admits to hating that she is crippled. The hardest thing for her to swallow was that her disability was a burdon to anyone that was close to her. Over time though, she accepted what her life has become and tries to make the best out of it. Mairs is a writer, has a good sense of humor and is very ture with her words and self

Assignment: Exercise #2, page 5,1They Say/I Say
In the essay, No Name Woman written by Maxine Hong Kingston, she writes about the horrific tale told to her by her mother, of her father’s sister who committed suicide. The mother’s version of the story is short in detail; the aunt’s name is never mentioned. Kingston’s revision of the story is told in many different ways. She writes the tale as “fairy tale”. Kingston doesn’t know all the fact about her aunt’s suicide, so she makes up different versions of what might have happened. A fairy tale of sorts.

Assignment #1
I walk up to a liquor store and see the sign, "NO GUNS!" After going to this store for many years I was outraged! The clerk asked me if he could help me. I told him, "Tell the owner he has lost a customer because your no guns sign in your store."

I celebrate the fact that the liquor store doesn't allow guns into their store! It makes me feel safe that there is some type of stand for gun violence in our neighborhood. I feel so uneasy when it comes to anything that can cause me bodily harm, it's bad enough that armed robbery crime rates have risen to an all time high.

Assignment 2
I reject the idea of fast food being the only source of convenient cheap food. One may argue grocery shopping and preparation is all it takes to have a good meal at low costs.Being overweight is a precursor for a plethora of health problems. Diabetes, joint problems, back pain are some to think about when a person cannot control his/her own weight.

Exercise 1:
Marijuana should be banned in all states. One major reason it should be banned is because Marijuana is a drug and people grow addicted to it. Also people believe Marijuana is a gateway drug to other drugs. Some people may believe that Marijuana has it's medical uses but there isn't any accepted medical uses it is just perceived as an addictive.

Marijuana should be legalized in all states. There are many beneficial uses of marijuana. One, it aids in caring for glaucoma, which is a medical use. Also, legalizing marijuana can help stimulate the economy by taxing just like how they tax alcohol and tobacco.

Assignment: They Say/I Say, answer exercise#1 from chapter 2, page 40.

(First write-up example)
I believe that the idea of god implies the abdication of human reason, so there is no need to believe in a god or deity. I believe that I am responsible for everything I do, and that everything around me is designed by me. The idea that something outside of myself created everything around me and that there is a reason for the unexplainable is not something I believe in, I am an Atheist.

(Second write-up example)
Faith in something greater than me is the foundation of my life. God is the center of my world knowing He is the creator of all things. I am human. I am made of flesh. I am imperfect, and still, I am perfectly made in Him.

"Believing game" , They Say I Say
02/22/2013

Some twenty odd years ago there was a cartoon that was aired on one of the major cable networks. every morning before school sitting in front of the television absorbed by the richness in depth and poetry that versed through the characters' dialogue could help to make a child feel good about learning about life, at least during that time slot through the eyes or ears of a great author such as one Mark twain. It was like a treat to hear or watch the story of Tom sawyer and later in the season, a Huck Finn.
Boy of I only knew what these two were really getting into or more so what world mark twain was actually writing about, it may have made me wonder. Because you see, Mark twain didn't write children's books. i mean he did in the sense that you can find his literature in children's libraries but that's not to say that it has not been adapted, formatted, censored, chopped and re-processed.
Some people think it a bad thing that a person'a words get changed from what they really have put out. His writing is artwork and honestly how do you censor art and still keep a straight face. They want to say it is better for a young mind to take in such great literature to process and digest americana but don't let the kids read it as it is. Personally it is my belief that Mark twain wasn't meant for me as a child.

Mark twain the author was from a place and time where there was no ground for mincing words. What of that deep south still exists. May or may not be how it was back then. There is definite reason to argue. Should he be censored. There were those who wished to censor him then and there are those who wish to censor him now. reasons for censoring Mark twain have changed with regards to society and who is going to be reading him.
Is it a decision any one person can make to choose whether his works are worthy of being kept as original as possible so as to still bare the mark of Twain. far be it for me to Judge a man from a different world that doesn't know me, my people, or my interests. It strikes me as peculiar that a person can put a book on trial whose author hasn't been alive for some 100 years or more, and whose readers are grown folks.
Then again we don't know how Twain feels about our days and times and how imperative it is to our society that we lay to rest such framework that could cause unrest and turmoil to our youth whatever color, class, or gender boundary they perceive as being discriminatory towards them. What is keeping their doors from opening should be looked at vigilantly. I say to the depths of Hades with freedom of speech if it is keeping me or anyone else from achieving.

"To Tame a Wild Tongue"

If i din't feel Gloria Anzaldua had some powerful words to be shared no matter what tongue she was using, I don't know. What struck me center and with firth was the mentioning of the the language she picked up from others especially hearing of two women Puerto rican and Cuban speaking of "us" in spanish as a feminine word, which Gloria found most exhilirating being that she as a Chicana youth always used the masculine for "us" no matter whom or what was being referenced.
This makes me wonder how much I am missing out on by just lacking basic communicative Spanish language skills. I do know the inherent cultural differences between mixed, creole, caucasoid Spanish, and Native indigenous peoples. Internally i tend to juxtapose my racial biases with societal terms that would sway me towards a leftist feminist. Honestly it is a lot of work and I can always see the steps I take backwards because ingrained development I have picked up from friends or family. It hurts sometimes not to think of myself as part of the group or not being a part of "Real Mexican" culture.

The thinking that we have so many diferent languages growing up and can asssert our identities in so many different ways with different peoples leaves me tense and pessimistic. Where do we stop. Should we not keep an open mind to all universes and energies, including race and mindset. I note my chicano roots have been offset just by times and convenience. I am not necessarily part of the Spanish mix or indigenous mix, but what I do see on the streets leaves me feeling sadly illked. Not so late in the game what has mattered that I know myself, i know myself have an integrity, accountability, and can show structure in my actions. My weapons of choice are not just my words but also my actions. It is not hard to champion my efforts by stating that beyond principle and pride we need help as a whole spirit. Why is my language better than yours or yours better than mine. It does not ever matter what position you take so long as the perception is there. Finding myself has nothing to do with what tongue, or which ear. The picture is far more plain to see. Set a standard and proof by example.

The Believing Game

Cats are better than dogs. They are better in so many different ways. First, they are much more mellow. Second, they require much less attention. Third, they can care for themselves more than dogs can.

Dogs are much better than cats. I would much rather have a dog than a cat. First, they are more energetic and playful. Second, they show more love to their owners. Third, you can take them on walks and they are much more playful.

Rubin chapter paraphrase

Gretchen Rubin felt as though it was time to make a change in her life to make herself happier. She began this process by trying to get more sleep. It was not as easy as she first thought. Rubin found many things that could help improve her sleep habits. After many attempts of attacking the problem from different angles, the results became clear after a few weeks (21). She had much more energy throughout the day and her mood had been drastically improved.

The second change that Rubin had sought to make was to her exercise routine. She states that a large portion of Americans never get any type of workout throughout their day, and this sedentary lifestyle is a large reason for their unhappiness (21). While many people feel as though working out may tire them out, it actually boosts the levels of chemicals in their body that tend to improve mood and energy. Sometimes it is about just making the time throughout the day to get at least 20 minutes of exercise in.

The third change that she had decided to make was to her organization. This involved the physical organization of her house and the mental organization of her mind. These simple tasks of rearranging the clutter in our lives can relieve stress and improve the overall happiness of our lives greatly (25). It turned out that this was not very difficult for Gretchen at all to accomplish this and the benefits were substantial.

Exercise #1:
Pro: Women's health should be taken seriously. If a woman is pregnant, and she does not want the life to continue to live inside her, then she should have the right to terminate the pregnancy. It should not be any one else's decision because they are not the one with a life growing inside them. There are certain health risks that can be avoided by allowing abortions as well. I do not understand why it would be anyone's choice whether or not to terminate a pregnancy besides the individual carrying the fetus.
Con:
Life begins at conception. How could someone "terminate" a life that has not even been given the chance to live? It shouldn't be anyone's decision to kill a child when they do not have the voice to fight for themselves. It is not one's individual body they should be protecting, it is the life living inside the that, too, has rights.

Exercise #2:
Barbara Lazear Ascher focuses on the motives behind acts of kindness in her essay, On Compassion. She wonders if what drives these acts truly is pure compassion or other motives as she recalls multiple times she has witnessed people who face threats with kindness. Barbara reflects on the homeless and how they go through something that other people would not understand and this makes them more compassionate people. They truly understand suffering and it helps them be more empathetic and be selfless toward others.

They say I say pg.40-41
Ex.#1 and Ex.#2

Exercise 1 pg.40
I believe in Equal Rights for Woman. Beliefs I strongly disagree with is the fact that woman to the day are still less dominant that men, that a woman cant be president and woman cant play on an all men team. Woman can be just as strong and dominant as men, we may not physically look strong but out hearts and minds are. We are all equally the same.

Exercise 2 pg.41
Using "Just walk on by" By Staples
1.) Contrary to what Brent Staples claim, there are many people who don't look at his same race the way he things they do. For example, our President Barack Obama is an educated African-American, just like himself. The world is full of diversity, and not only are the whites successful and what he feels less dangerous. Over the years many non-African Americans have convicted a felony and has been all over the news. For example, the gun man at the movie theatre shooting during Batman premier and the gunman in Connecticut who devastatingly took many lives of young children. Staples feels just because he is a black man walking the streets at night, people see him differently. Being in that situation should not let him down, it should only make him stronger.

2.) When Staples presence is around others, not only down it affect them, but also himself. Many people in the world right now most likely feel the same way as Staples. It is sad to think that stereotypes and discrimination continually occur everyday. It is wrong, and if people continue to treat others this way, the society will always be in fear for NO REASON. If people are not treated this way; they would feel better about themselves. Diversity is a beautiful thing and the world should embrace one another. Where is the love?

Abortion belief summary
It's a Womans choice to have a child. Many women feel if once they get pregnant then they have no choice but to have the baby. This causes regret and or resentment for the child and can become easily irritated or even hate the child. Women who know they don't want children should get an abortion right away! Having an abortion prevents a woman from having a child in regret. It allows her to get back to her life, whereas having a child would only complicate and make life more difficult. The fact that you can chose whether or not you want a kid is great. The option to abort gives a woman a chance to decide whether she wants to complicate her life with such a big responsibility and if not she has up to three months to decide. Abortion helps to prevent unwanted children from being born. I think that fact is awesome because unwanted children grow up to be disturbed adults, and the cycle will continue. For which ever a woman decides not to have a baby is her sole decision, it's her body and her life that's going to change, and if that's something she doesn't want then abortion is the easiest quickest way out.

Anti abortion belief
Having a child is an option giving to all women, but it's not they're decision alone. First it's up to the partner/ father to be, then extended family and God should be considered. God does things for a reason and I strongly believe that. to abort a child is wrong and should never be an option because there are so many different options where the child can enter the world and live. Maybe a family member can't have children or just loves children and doesn't mind raising another could take the child. Maybe it's a family somewhere in the world who desperately wants children and can't have any. There are numerous organizations to help find children good homes and loving parents. But first I believe it's a,womans responsibility to love the child growing inside of her and should want her child to have a better life then her own. Why would anyone want to kill something they've created and who is here to represent them? Many, women do every year but it's those same women who will never forget the pain of sucking the life from there child, they'll never forget the fact there once was a child growing inside them. It's these, same women who most likely won't forget the day the child was suppose to be born. With all that being known is it really worth killing the child? Why? When they child can be loved by someone if not you. Some women probably feel like the world places judgment if you don't raise your child yourself, they do pass judgment but not for being selfless and giving your child a better life because you couldn't but for being selfish and not giving the innocent a chance to be here. God promotes selflessness and us inhibitors of his land should follow insuit. you'll be less stressed and more free when you consider others
