Cyber-Freewrite

We watched the video: Revision Strategies (The Write Course). Please reflect on the video in a narrative that considers your revision strategies. How has Stewart Pidd Hates English affected your revision process?

Why is the opportunity to revise a welcome one for advanced writers? Why do some writers dread such assignments?

Use examples from the film. How is revision defined and what steps are offered? How is re-writing a step in the writing process? What did the scholar, Sandra Pearl, mean about editing prematurely?

What myths did Dr. Linda Flowers say about the "perfect draft syndrome"? Are you so afflicted? What is writer based prose vs. reader based prose? What is inspiration?

What did you learn about the writing process that you didn't know before, or if you knew it, you were not about to articulate it before now?

We will complete the film in the early class in the morning. There are about 10 minutes left.

After watching this video I realize that I need to revise my papers more carefully. The points that were made were valuable, but I tend to skip them in the writing process. Stewart Pidd Hates English has helped me spot most of my errors more frequently and has given me the ability to fix them properly. The opportunity to revise is welcomed by advanced writers because they know they cannot get it perfect the first time and they appreciate hearing someone else's point of view. Some writers dread this assignment because it can be a lot of work and sometimes writers just want to be done. Revision is defined as to see again-- basically to read your paper again and re-write accordingly. Re-writing is only a step in the writing process, you also have to edit your writing by checking for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors. Sandra Pearl talked about editing prematurely, which means editing before revising your writing. A lot of writers will spell check and change words before even revising their writing. Revision must take place first because the entire outline of the writing can be changed. The "perfect draft syndrome" is when someone tries to write a paper all the way through in one sitting. The writer believes they must write perfect sentences and paragraphs all at once. This cannot be achieved because writing is a multi-step process. I believe that I sometimes become afflicted to this, which I will not conciously realize. Writer-based prose is when a writer is writing to self. Reader-based prose is when the writer writes to the audience or the reader. The video mentioned that writing in writer-based prose for the first draft is fine-- as long as you revise it and put the final draft into reader-based prose. From this video I learned that editing is a different process than revising. That is probably my main problem, changing grammar and spelling and thinking I have revised my paper. I also learned about writer vs. reader-based prose. I will be more concious of this in my revisions. The last tip that I took from the video is to put away your writing for a day or two and come back to it with a fresh mind. I usually try to crank it out in one day, which is probably why I do not always recieve the best grade possible.

For advanced writers to review their paper, this is inviting because they will be able to see the room for improvement. Now for beginning writers it’s frightening because of the possibilities of having to do their paper all over again. To those in the film they said that inspiration was, “The act of attaching the seat of your pants to the seat of your chair.” I have learned that writing is a long process and revising your paper starts well before the paper is done, it happens while the individual is writing their first draft. After you have written the paper have someone else read it to make sure that your points were well articulated and clear. In writing a paper make absolute sure you know who your audience is and that the most important ideas you have are expressed concisely. Another thing I have learned is that rearranging gives a person a new way to look at their paper. When thinking about SPHE, this has affected my revision process for the better, it has allowed for me to check continually my work and slow down to make sure that my work has correct grammar and punctuation.

James, I believe you say that the revising starts before the writer finishes the paper. No it doesn't. This is called editing prematurely. Do not start thinking about revision until the paper is complete otherwise you will never finish and at some point the paper is due.

The video has totally changed my revision strategies, the meaningful factor the video pointed out to me was the rewrite is not a penalty; it is part of the writing process. This really gave me a very good feeling as I was very upset when I received my first draft of my second paper and Prof. Wanda marked REWRITE this paragraph. I was thinking I have already REWRITE (I feel I have) it before I turned in, what can I do next? Today, this video really pointed out my misunderstanding of rewrite.

The film has defined revision is the process of the writing. There have four steps when we are doing the revision. (1) Look at the overall paper. (2) Look at the paper organization. (3) Examine each paragraph and (4) Focus to the idea of the topic.

Rewriting is to re-organize the layout of the paper. The Scholar, Sandra Pearl, has suggested cut out every paragraph and puzzle them to see which setting is the best for the thesis. She pointed out editing is the final stage to make sure the spelling of the words and the grammar. If we do the editing before we have a clear idea of the paper means doing it prematurely. If we too concern the edit elements, we will not able to see the loophole of the paper.

Dr. Linda Flowers say about the "perfect draft syndrome" was exactly what I had before. I was too eager to do the first draft perfect and pay too much attention to the individual sentence and want to make every sentence perfect and come up missing the main idea. I have used writer based prose instead of reader based prose which is really big mistake. By doing this, the paper will not be convincing to the reader. We have to remember three important elements when we start (or rewrite) the paper, audience of the paper, objective of the paper and the main point we want to bring up.

Short note to share: I have read the Alehouse last night after I did SPHE Parallel Structure. I found a very good (and simple) sample of Parallel Structure from Alehouse: An Interview with Al Young (p.55). I like the introduction the most.

1.) Stewart Pidd has helped my writing in a lot of ways. One of the ways is overall construction of my essay. I think the most improved would have to be my introductions, Pidd has helped me make my intros more to the point and strong.
2.) The way that I learned to write, essay revisions were the worst part about the process. You have to go over and meticulously pick out all the error, the work was tedious and boring for me so I dreaded editing papers. By watching the video The Write Course I can see that good writers look at writing in a whole other way then me. I used to look at an essay or any piece of writing as one draft then revise it, until it is perfect. But doing it that way made me just want to write a perfect draft out. Good writers look at a piece of writing as many drafts, but at least two. The first is the idea draft where you get your thoughts on paper. The next is revising, re reading and looking at the construction of the writing. If you look at writing in the second way, it makes it easier because you put the revision at the same importance and in the same process as the actually writing, you don’t separate the two.
3.) The revsion steps that the film stated.
1) Look at the overall paper
2) Look at the papers organization
3) Examine each one of the paragraph
4) Make sure the paper flows and answer the readers questions

Editing prematurely means that when you write your first draft you try to make it perfect. When the writer does this they spend more time thinking about the perfect sentences and less time about the flow and how it answers the readers questions.
4.) Dr, Lina Flowers was talking about the “perfect draft syndrome”, this is when the writer believes that to be a good writer you have to be able to write one perfect draft. This means no editing just straight through. I know this “syndrome” very well because I have it. The way I was taught I was under the impression that to be a good writer I had to be able to produce great writings without editing or even having a second draft. A writer-based prose is someone that talks to themselves, not the reader in their writing. Reader based prons are the opposite, a writer who talks to the reader not themselves.
5.) I realized that re-reading and editing is a part of writing just like the actual process of writing. I knew this but had never really thought about it and after watching the video I realized that writing is a process and editing is part of that as well.

Revision Strategies

Stewart Pidd had affected my revision process because it shows many errors and steps to correcting them. Using Steward Pidd, I now have great knowledge on how to use MLA formatting. When revising, I go through the essay 2-3 times before sticking with my final thought. After typing my essay, I also give it to 2-3 more sources to read before sticking with the outcome. When doing these strategies I see the different mistakes made when another person corrects my work for me. Like stated in the movie, I even sometimes see mistakes I made on my own when I put my essay up and then go back over it. I think writers dread such assignment because it takes a lot of time. The revision process usually comes with mistakes you never noticed. Sometimes as a writer, I even see myself rewriting the whole essay. There were some questions in the movie stated that writers should ask themselves. Some of the questions consist of:

• who’s your audience?
• what’s the objective?
• what is the single most important thing to say?
• and what are the major points?

A couple of important steps given from the movie is to:

1. look at the overall paper
2. look at the papers organization
3. examine each of the paragraphs
4. focus attention on the sentence and words

Sandra Pearl mentioned that unskilled writers edit prematurely and that the key is to write basic prose and keep the reader in mind. Inspiration is the divine quality of the writings or words of a person so influenced. I learned that putting down the more familiar words is a better choice.

Stewart Pidd has definetely improved my main mechanics that I use in my writing. Overall, the improvements that the book has taught me have been impressive and therefore has elevated my writing ability to another level. Certain errors have become more apparent to me and I believe that it is due to the Stewart Pidd book. Repetition to me is the only way of learning and I now understand. In the movie it mentions that you must revise your essay after your done and must be able to re-read and re-edit thoroughly in order to perfect your writing. I do this in every essay and I see this as important as sources it is just another ingredient necessary for writing essays.

Revision Strategies

Before watching the movie, I considered doing revision that is not an important step in writing. However, after watching the movie, I realize that writers should have a good revision strategy, for when writers revise, they learn from their mistake and understand their assignment. Stewart Pidd Hates English helps me to write logically and find out my error’s spot easily. The opportunity to revise is welcomed by advanced writers because writers receive audiences’ onions about their writing. From this, writers can improve their papers better. However, writers also dread, for they have to rewrite and re-read their paper again. Revision is a step of writing’s process which includes looking at the overall paper, looking at the paper organization, examining each paragraph, and focusing to the idea of the topic. Rewriting is a final step in the writing process. The scholar, Sandra Pearl said “ editing prematurely” which means editing is first period of writing process, and Dr. Linda Flowers said about the “perfect draft syndrome” which means that writers try to write perfect draft, so they don’t have to rewrite their papers. I also have the “perfect draft syndrome” whenever I write essays, so it takes me a lot of time to write essay.
A writer-based prose is about writers’ expression about themselves, and reader based prons are the opposite to writer-based prose. Understanding the writing process helps me to write fast, logically and can avoid unwanted mistakes.

I thought the video was silly. The black girl with the big hair was oviously the antagonist. She would complain about how hard writing is and everyone would jump on her ass, about how wonderful revisions are.

They used that voice people would use to talk to a 3 year old. This is not how people talk in the real world, and was distracting.

What myths did Dr. Linda Flowers say about the "perfect draft syndrome"?

I remember something about how people expect perfection on the first try.

Are you so afflicted?
No, because everything I do is perfect.

What is writer based prose vs. reader based prose?

You say POtato, I say poTAto

What is inspiration?
When I come across it I'll let you know... So far these assignements have been lacking.

Revision Strategies
I definitely believe that SPHE has improved my editing and critiquing of papers. The film discussed how advanced writers welcome the revising process whereas the beginning writer dreads this process. The advanced writer uses this step to improve their paper and make the paper flow better. The beginner thinks that they can produce perfect work and do not need to revise it. Re-writing is considered a step in the writing process because a paper can not be considered complete till it has been revised and errors have been corrected. There is a difference though between editing and revising, editing focus on punctuation and replacement of words, where revising can change whole sentence or deletion of ideas. Dr. Flowers spoke about the "perfect draft" myth which I am found guilty of believing. Some writers think that they can write a perfect paper in one sitting and with no re-reading or revisions. This is a myth because there is always some revision that can be done to a first draft. I have been known to sit and write a 5 page paper in one sitting and turn it in without even re-reading it. SPHE and this film have helped me see how much of a positive impact revising can have on a paper. Reader and Writer based prose were discussed and said that Writer based prose is when the writer focuses on their personal experience or the process in which they worked out a problem. Writers should avoid writing in writer based prose. Reader based prose is more of a narrative that speaks to the reader.

I think Stewart Pidd Hates English has definitely improved my writing skills. It shows how to correct errors in your essay. Sometimes the essays are a little confusing and hard to write. The book also teaches us how to use MLA format correctly in our essays. I do not like to re-read my essays, after watching the video I learned that I do not have to read, but I can look at the entire essay in some other way. Good writers look at one piece of writing as many drafts. First a writer put thoughts on a paper, then revising and looking at the construction of the writing. Looking at the writing in second way makes it easier, because you need to put the revision at the same importance and in the same process as the actual writing; you do not have to separate the two. The revision steps were in the video are
1)Look at the overall paper
2) Look at the papers organization
3) Examine each one of the paragraph
4) Make sure the paper flows and answer the readers’ questions
Editing prematurely means that when the writers write perfect sentences in writing they do not think about the flow and the readers’ answers in the writing.
Dr. Flowers was talking about the perfect draft syndrome. It means that the writers believe that to be a good writer is to be able to write on perfect draft. I try to do that in my first draft, but it never work out for me. A writer-based prose is someone that talks to themselves, not the reader in their writing. Reader based pros are the opposite, a writer who talks to the reader not themselves.
I learned that re reading and editing is not torture, but it is part of the whole process of writing.

The video talks about one of the most important part of an essay which is revision. Revising my essay makes a big difference. I feel like you should always proofread an essay before even thinking of it as a final draft, it’s a big improved to have revision done on a first draft and becoming final draft. Revision should only be done if an essay is fully written.

Our Stewart Pidd book, along with the video we watched in class have helped me become more aware of the importance of revising essays. Often I am guilty of often writing a 3-6 page paper without even revising it. This is probably not the smartest thing to do, seeing as how there is always room for revision. In the video, Dr. Flowers discussed "perfect draft" myth. Writers, like myself as stated before, think that they can write a paper with no revisions. Another fact I gained from the video was the difference between editing and revision. Editing can be seen as fixing punctuation errors or grammar errors. Revising has the potential to actually eliminate an entire sentence or chunk or a paragraph around, changing part of the essay completely. Overall, the video and its facts were very useful. SPHE had helped refresh my memory of the many mistake we still make. We must remember, there is always room for improvement in your writing.

I think Stewart Pidd Hates English has really helped me improve my English skills. I have, for a long time, considered myself to be a great writer. I always prided myself on this notion. When I started to read and do the Steward Pidd exercises, I found that my writing improve significantly. Now, I know where I make my mistakes and how to fix them. In term of grammar, Steward Pidd has increased my abilities by two folds. I’m always correcting and revising my essays, if I can not get a perfect on my analysis, I will get a perfect on my grammar. I revise my paper four to five times. Each time, you eliminate about half the errors. It is very affective. Here are some steps in the video: 1)Look at the overall paper
2) Look at the papers organization
3) Examine each one of the paragraph
4) Make sure the paper flows and answer the readers’ questions
Perfect draft syndrome believes that a person can write one draft perfectly. That is almost impossible because there are a lot of areas where something can go wrong. I’m a good writer and I revise my essay a lot of times. I love to rewrite and reread because it gives me the opportunity to get the best possible grade.

Revision Strategies

My revision process has been affected by Stewart Pidd Hates English because the work book actually shows errors and we have to correct them within an essay. By doing this, I have learned the correct way of writing and the wrong way of writing essays which decreased the amount of errors I usually have in my essays. It also helped by helping me to point out errors within my own essay as I would in a Stewart Pidd essay. By using Stewart Pidd Hates English, I have become more comfortable with revising my essays on my own; I do not wait until the teacher suggests revisions. As stated in the movie, I see mistakes I made after I already turned in my essay and I go over it again and revise areas that need revision.
I think writers dread such assignment because it takes a long time to complete. When revising you notice new things you did not realize while writing your essay the first time.
The revision steps in the film stated:
1) Look at the overall paper
2) Look at the papers organization
3) Examine each one of the paragraph
4) Make sure the paper flows and answer the readers questions
