Today we reviewed the major essays and peer reviewed first drafts of the SE essay. Today is the last day I can drop students who are not passing. I am dropping students whose work and attendance are sketchy. If you are one of these students who want a grade rather than a "W" let me know so I can add you back. I am speaking of students who missed quizzes 2 and 3 and essay exam 2, have not gotten revisions back to me on the Half the Sky essay or the book report essay.

We will continue revision essay tomorrow and doing the peer reviews. We will also write essay exam 3.

Some students spoke to me but of those students, some have not upheld their ends of the bargain, so I am dropping you. You need to be in touch with me, if you plan to miss class.

I will show you a video on Argumentation on Wednesday, and after peer reviews, I'd like to continue reading Lysistrata (smile). The SV Agreement essay is due next Tuesday, May 18, 2010. We will review it sometime this week. Students can turn it in early. You are held responsible for the information.

Response to Argumentation/ Propaganda
Questions for Close Reading 3. Weasel words are small words that usually slip right past us, but make a difference between reality and illusion. Weasel words like “Helps control” can be interpreted as “stops” by the consumer or viewer of the advertisement. Often times the listeners assume that weasel words mean something without understanding the advertiser’s definition of the word, and how the advertisers came about their statistics they maybe using in their advertisement. Questioning the advertisers is key to understanding, if your purchasing their product, what the truth is in their advertisement and do you support that truth.
Argumentation is the flip side of understanding propaganda, it helps one understand how to support or refute the opposition. First, understand both sides of any particular argument, this is vital to the decision you maybe making and being on the “winning side.” In argumentation it is important to understand and know your audience so when presenting the argument your side will be more persuasive to the audience and convince them, the audience, that your idea is the “only way an intelligent person” should think.
Argumentation and propaganda is something everyone faces daily. When presented with ideas this is a process of information. Information must be checked and proved, one process can be called a syllogism, in which an argument has a major premise, minor premise and conclusion which is used in either a deductive or inductive reasoning, this is a type of argumentation that is logical in nature. If the argument has no logic it will fail.

Response to Propaganda Techniques in Today’s Advertising and Argumentation Video Notes

After reading Propaganda Techniques in Today’s Advertising, I have to say that I agree with a lot of what is said in this essay by Ann McClintock. How all these big corporation brainwash their buyers to purchase their products using techniques for advertising, through ad’s, magazines, TV, and all different ways and places. How hundreds of advertising claim of various types and styles. The different names of these techniques; Name Calling, Glittering Generalities, Transfer, Testimonial, Plain Folks, Card Stacking, and Bandwagon, all are very successful methods. I have to say that all of these different techniques really actually work. It’s all of what people see they want to do, or what these celebrities use your average Joe wants to use, or if your average Joe uses the product then it must be good. It is as if everything as to be true just because it is on TV, but that is not always true. It seems that today’s society is a follower, no one has their own sense of thought or desition making because they always get influence with advertisements. Since advertisements all are over every day of a person’s life. It seems that today there is not one place that there is not one advertisement of some sort. This essay just reminded me how we all even though we sometimes do not want to admit to it are brainwashed by advertisements and propaganda.

Response to Argumentation Video

We watched half of the video about Argumentation last Wednesday. We may not have chance to finish the rest of the video. However, I really want to share my comment here. The first time Professor Wanda mentioned the inductive proof and deductive proof, I totally confused (it was about 2 weeks ago). Then, I looked up dictionary when I got home that day. The meaning from the dictionary still could not answer my doubt. The following day, Professor Wanda gave us more details about inductive vs deductive by using examples; she was using fishes in her examples was very helpful and easy to understand. I looked up the “Rules for Writers” which also have some easy understand example for us afterward. Last week argumentation’s video was a very good chance to review the difference and the video was telling us what time we can use these 2 writing reasoning forms properly. I like the video topic very much.

I found Propaganda Techniques in today Advertising to be very interesting and very true. When I think about the many concepts that were conveyed in this piece, I have to say that it is true. I would like to thank Ms. Sabir for this article because I want to be a Public Relation agent and this gave me some insight into the things I must know. There are many many types of advertizing, and every day people are exposing to it too. There are: Name Calling, Glittering Generalities, Transfer, Testimonial, Plain Folks, Card Stacking, and Bandwagon, all are very successful methods. People often times, get caught up in what they see on television and believe it is true. People believe that television can never be wrong, it is always right. Operating upon this notion, advertising companies can trick consumers into buying everything they want them too. This piece is very true because everyone I know generally believe that. It is very susceptible to advertising. That why it is so effecting.

Weasel words can be the difference used in selling an item through advertising. These small yet effective words can create the difference in the eyes of consumers. These words such as “Helps control” can be defined by consumers. It makes the consumers believe that they already know what the definition of “helps control” when in reality advertisers have redefined the real meaning of phrases as this one. Weasel words cloud the truth of many products and confuse the consumer because they are unable to understand the truth to these words. Consumers must be willing to research their own products that they will purchase because it will make a worlds difference in knowing the truth of these products.
We must understand both sides of particular argument. There are many key points that one must understand in order to be fully capable of understanding argumentation. You must understand your audience that you are presenting too because they are the ones that must understand your argument. If you confuse the audience your argument will fail because the audience did not understand. It must be clear and specifically tailored for a specific audience.
