Day 1, Monday, January 24, 2011, the classes were both full, as in no more room in the physical classroom and no room on the rosters (smile). There is a numbering system for adds I am not familiar with as of yet, however, if you'd like to be in the class and if this is your only options, especially students who are on the wait list (before it disappeared--I have a copy of it), come to class and do the assignments.

Day 2, I am absent. I have to go to the hospital to check on my stomach. I apologize for the fact that the 8 AM class did not receive notification; next time, call me sooner. I always call in when absent.

Our library orientations are Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at 8 and 9 AM with Professor Steve Gerstle, for the 50 minute class time. Meet in the Library, LRC first floor instead of in D-205/6. Put this in your datebooks.

Homework is to listen or watch the State of the Union Address this evening. KPFA.org 94.1 FM, KQED.org 88.5 FM, probably all the television stations and on-line at 9 PM EST, which is 6 PM PT. You can watch it at www.whitehouse.gov and on CNN.com too.

This video speaks to the history of the address and why it takes place: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/01/25/inside-white-house-state-union-address

Specifics on homework for tonight:

Watch the video before the address, if possible, tonight as you watch the address and/listen to what is stated, notice the audience and their response to the president. What key points does the president make this evening? How is our nation or union doing?

Focus on three points raised: one a problem, one an achivement and one an issue which is larger than one term, perhaps because it was inherited from previous administrations.

Do you agree with the framing of the issues? Why or why not?

Did the president leave anything out which you feel is important, like higher education, elder care, homeless youth, the increasing prison population, which effects you directly? If so, what issue was that? Do you feel that this State of the Union Address spoke to you? If so, give examples of that recognition? How did our president acknowledge your presence in the audience?

Bring in your notes for discussion Wednesday, January 26. We will post a response to the questions on the blog in class Thursday, January 27, 2011 in A-232. We will meet in D-205/206 and walk over to A-232 on Thursday, where we will meet each Thursday. We will have to share computers (there are 30).

If you have a laptop, bring it.

Homework for the rest of the week is included in the syllabus and letter: An essay about a woman you admire is due Monday, January 31.

The response to the syllabus and to my letter can be submitted now through Friday, January 28, 2011. You are to email me the personal information and answers to questions. You can post your response to the letter on the blog.

Thanks to the students who responded to the questions, if not the syllabus (smile). Don't forget to respond to the syllabus. Use examples to let me know you read it. For the students who took all the college prep classes, I hope Stewart Pidd doesn't annoy you too much. Perhaps you can assist other classmates who are having trouble, this goes for others who find Pidd easy.

We will start Pidd Monday with a quiz on confused words and sentence punctuation. Thursday we will review MLA for essays.

It must have been amazing to see all those sights in Africa. I especially liked the part with Wyclef Jean and Mama Africa. If I went to Africa I would probably go to South Africa. Firstly, I would love to see their rugby team play at the stadium there. Also, I find the history of South Africa very interesting. I wonder if we Americans could deal with racial problems like they do in South Africa. They have healed all the racial tension mere decades after Apartheid. In the US we are still recovering from centuries old conflicts.

My name is Jacob Wise. I was born in Berkeley at Alta Bates in 1992. I spent most of my childhood moving back and forth between my mom, in Mississippi and later Texas, and my dad, in various parts of California. I recently moved back to the East Bay from Dallas, Texas. The whole style of living in the south is completely different from the lifestyle here in California. At the moment I am learning two instruments, the guitar and the harmonica. Other than fiddling around with noises I like to read and write. Mostly I like to read about philosophy and psychology. Books like Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietszche and The Stranger by Albert Camus. As far as writing goes I generally write free verse poems.

To the class I can offer my thoughts and my ears. My thoughts in addition to my ears are my greatest strengths. I am able to synthesize the information I get with my ears into very well considered thoughts. What I would like to get from this class is a better mechanism to relate my thoughts to other people. The reason for this is that I often talk in such a way that some people cannot understand the subject matter to which I refer. I am sure that as long as you create an environment that keeps me interested and does not censure my thoughts I will excel in your class.

Dear Professor,
I am taking English 1A as a brush up to my knowledge of English as a written language. Most Americans can speak English, but few can write properly; I want to be one of the those few. English became my major in the second semester of my freshman year. I originally started out as a History major, but then quickly became overwhelmed with the first class and dropped the course. I ended up taking two History courses my next semester, but I did not feel the same way towards History as I did for English, particularly writing.
Writing allows me to express myself clearly and purposefully to others who take the time to read my blog. It settles my thoughts as if they were busy sand in a glass of water. Writing rids my mind of any anxiety that overwhelms me throughout the day. It has become my outlet, crutch even.
I know this class will help me as I venture further into the depths of my English major. I must understand the basics before I can critique masterpieces.
The five goals I have for this class are as follows:
1. Become more confident in my writing.
2. Analyze and keep up with the assigned readings.
3. Participate in class. Mainly stating my opinion, even if I am the only one who thinks it.
4. Grasp the quintessential nature of the English language through writing.
5. Have fun :).

See you tomorrow!
Tyler

Dear professor,
My names Eman Obad. I currently live in Oakland and this is my first year attending any sort of college. I have always been interested in English but I guess now i get the chance to actually study it.
To me writing is an escape from the world. Though I might not be a great writer as far as punctuation and some grammar, I'm still very interested. At times when I feel like no one could understand what I'm going through I just write it out and it becomes my way to vent.
My five goals I have for this class are as follows:
1.Become more comfortable/confident in my writing
2.Try to do my best and get a good grade
3.Improve my writing and punctuation skills
4.Become more comfortable with sharing my views with the class. and being able to agree with other peoples opinions.
5.Read more books that will help me gain more skills in writing and reading.
6. :) make my daughter proud!!

Peace :D

What is your goal for this semester?

I think one of my strengths that I have to this class is that I enjoy writing and reading. I want to learn to write better and learn from my mistake. I took about three years off from school and I know that I am a little rusty on my writing now but I know I will approve later on the semester. I hope I can improve my writing skills and increase my knowledge about English such as essay, grammars, quotes, work cited and so on. I don’t feel anxious or nervous about it because I think that this will be a pleasant class, where you just have to use your imagination and try to put your thoughts on paper. I know that sometimes it is difficult; that sometimes you don’t even know how to start or how to find the right word to put down on paper. That’s exactly what I expect to learn from this class, so that I can improve my writing skills and be able to find ways to begin and develop a different visual image on writing.

Answers to the SUA Questions

1. Education, military, business policies, renewable energy and unity are the key points in the speech.

2. The economy is getting better after the Wall Street incident. ALthough there are improvements, it is still not enough because a lot of people are jobless.

Focus Points:

1. There is still a large amount of unemployment and also a lot of people are not getting enough education and we're losing the professionals that studied here in the U.S

2. The economy is getting back to it's feet after the crash in 2008.

3. One issue that was larger than one term is the war we're fighting overseas.

I don't think he left anything out. I think he has talked about the important things that the American people should work on and what everyone has been doing in COngress.

Almost everything that he talked about affected me because I think everything is intertwined. IF one thing is disrupted then the young people will notice the effects such as the budget cuts on different programs. I really did feel like he's talking more to the COngress because he keeps talking more about what to do and what she be done about it or how people should work together. I mean, yea everyone should work together to make the economy better and the nation better for everyone, but it's in the politicians' hands to make it happen. That's what he keeps saying when he would mention a goal.

Letter Response

Dear Ms.Sabir,

Hello! My name is Julie. I used to be in your English 201B Fall 2006 which I really enjoy being in your class. When I found out that you teach English 1A I was excited and have to be in your class again. I’m taking this class to get my Associate Science Degree in Dental Assisting and be in the program Fall 2011.

Your trips to Dakar, Senegal sound wonderful and most adventure place to go. It must be a beautiful place to sights see and enjoying the nature there. The place must have many things to see and do. I was searching for Dakar because I wanted to know where the place was. The city lies on the western part of Arica, and I saw many amazing picture of the markets, museums and beaches. I hope some day if I have time I would love to travel around the world (smile).

1. One problem that Obama raised was the fact that the amount of students who study secondary education and the amount of students who graduate from high school is very low compared to what is desired.
2. One achievement that Obama raise was that the power of the Iraqi government is finally being placed back into the hands of the Iraqi people.
3. An issue that Obama raised that was larger than one term is the economy. The economy was falling ever since the Iraq conflict started. Now that we are almost out of Iraq completely, the economy has begun to rise again.

I agree with the framing of the issues. Partly because Obama gives such great speeches, it is almost impossible not to agree with him. Also I thought that he brought up very important issues. Especially about education. I highly agree with his policy, Race to the Top. I believe that a competition between all schools will really increase the school budgets.

I believe that Obama could have talked about prisons. This is because, we, the taxpayers pay for these prison inmates to live a life given to them. There are a lot of people who are barely scrapping by just because their money goes to prisons. It goes to the prisons so that the prisoners may receive a higher quality of life than the people who honestly work to put bread on the table.
I believe that the part that spoke to me was solely the segment about education. Because I am a student, and have been my whole life, anything on education really affects me. Especially in these years of my life where I am actually paying for books/supplies/etc. Again I really like the Race to the Top policy much more than no child left behind because I believe that no child left behind really lowers the bar on education. I believe that if you cannot pass the second grade, then you should not be able to go onto the third grade. It isn't fair to the children who really tried to pass their subjects.
The audience was acknowledged through the camera. I saw that Whenever Obama would tell a specific story, the camera would pan to the people in which he is talking about. For example, when he talked about Arizona, the camera panned to the family of the nine year old girl. I believe that the occasional humor that he tossed into his speech kept his audience alive and well (as in attentive to his words). As for my presence in the audience, Obama talked about topics that directly affect me like education. Also since I actually have a friend or two, or a dozen in the armed forces, it made me glad that the Iraq war was almost at its close.

State of the Union

I felt the state of the union addressed by president Obama was very precise in the topics discussed and very successful regardless of all the negative feedback. The focus on tax reform and education took care of the technical aspects while the additional approaching of people (the owner of the drilling company and kid with cancer)gave it the emotional zing.
Education is no doubt an underrated issue. People do not appreciate its importance in regards to the development of America's youth and towards a brighter future for everyone. As cheesy as it is to say the phrase "children are the future", there is still a viable truth in it and people tend to become lazy regarding education. It helps to narrow it down to the importance of the education of one's own children or if not married and with children, just remembering one's own childhood and the benefits received. President Obama chose to focus on this topic because it is local, therefore it will relate to everyone. Not only did it address an important issue, but it won over a majority of the people.
Focusing on tax reform grabs the attention of the more politically active audience. People do not want their president to focus his/her time on only local issues. It would make Obama seem less experienced when of course he is one of the most able presidents we've had.
Obama during his speech approached a couple of people which intensified the emotional aspect of his speech. It's like adding the cherry on top of a delicious seven layer cake. He referred to his new health care program through a Texas teen cancer patient who had been given treatment because of it. He actually had some of these patients sitting as guests in the first lady's box. This was a very emotionally affective use of persuasion by president Obama. It painted a vivid picture of the importance of his new health care program and rightfully guilts the people into agreeing with him.
Overall Obama's speech was very well written and well rehearsed. Regardless of some of the criticism it received, Obama made a huge impact on the crowd and the majority of people watching would conquer.

Reflection on President Obama's State of the Union Address

President Obama delivers his state of the union address for the year to come. The speech was to focus to create jobs now and boost competitiveness over the long term. His vision is for putting aside the politics that divide us and moving forward to up our game to out compete in the global economy, and win the future for our children and our country.

He has the right tone, makes us feel good and great inspiration that we are the best American. But there was something that needed to be saying about the future in our country, partially regarding what we going to do deficit in the future. Such as the laws have changed on the best college and university for students to come and study to achievement you gained not by just doing nothing. Also, he is eager to work with people to come up with ideas to make health care more affordable or care better to the system. I was surprise that all the people got up and started to clapped with the approval because it seem that Obama has an affect on everyone that agrees with him.

State of the Union

This was actually my first time watching a state of the union. To be honest, I am not into politics at all and could barley understand what the president was talking about. It isn't so much that I didn't understand what he was saying but more that I didn't understand how it affects me. I am not sure if it is just me but throughout all the changes in the past, it did not feel any different to me. However, the president has a lot of great things to say about education and family which are both equally important. Hopefully he can make a change that even I can see.
