Cyber-Assignment for Library Orientation. . . .

Today the 9-9:50 a.m. class had a library orientation with Professor Steve Gerstle. Most students did not remember that we were meeting in the library today. Please put important dates in your datebook. I do not always remember to remind you.

Professor Gerstle's presentation centered around research: how to find articles in the library database, which is available on campus without a password; however, at home you need a password and access information. Pick up a handout at the reference desk.

He gave us two handouts, one on Information Literacy, the other on how to determine if a document is from a popular or or scholarly periodical. We also watched a short film.

In a short reflection (100-250 words) talk about the reasons why one might use research in one's writing and why it is important to know the difference between popular and scholarly documents.

Note new information. I hope everyone has a student identification card. If you do not, get one. They are free. You cannot use the labs without one nor can you check out books. All of your essays will require research. It's what we do in English 1A (smile).

Students posted their assignments from yesterday in the wrong place. Post them again in the proper place. I will erase them. If you look at the assignment. It has not been assigned yet.

Assignment: In a short reflection (100-250 words) talk about the reasons why one might use research in one's writing and why it is important to know the difference between popular and scholarly documents.

Information Literacy

To write college papers it is important to: reflect, learn, and connect with what is being asked of the student for a peculiar subject. One of the best places to research papers is in the college library webpage, found at alameda.peralta.edu/library under ‘Article Databases’, and to access this information the username is ‘student’ and the password is ‘alameda’. When researching a paper it is important to cite three sources, and one the sources needs to be found in the ‘article databases’ system. When research a paper the student should use the six tools: define task, identify options, select sources, analyze content, present findings and evaluate. A very important component is to know the difference between scholarly and popular periodicals because in college research papers the scholarly periodicals is what is needed. Scholarly periodicals are credited writings from scholars, researchers, and students. These periodicals have content that are experts in the field that they are affiliated with, the writings are lengthy and cite other works. As supposed to popular periodicals which are written by journalists, staff writers and is not considered accredited work. It is required to research all papers through self-evaluate of an assignment and to cite works from scholarly periodicals.

The use of research is vital when writing a paper in a college level class. The use of research and cited facts confirms the validity of a paper. With out the use of trusted and reliable research, the creditably of the paper gets much lower. The use of popular sources may be acceptable for some types of writing, but not a formal English paper. The use of peer reviewed material is imperative because it has be verified to be a creditable source.

In the library orientation that we had there was a lot of information given some of it was clear but some wasn't that clear. I also saw this orientation already at another college. Overall the information was useful again and learned more on where the databases are and how to search for a book. People would use the library databases is to do research for an essay or project. Its very serious that you have all the information your going to need to write the essay and know the difference between scholarly and popular.

Short Reflection:Research

In college, it is always important to use as much research as possible when writing an assignment. Research is the foundation of substantial information regarding facts towards any subject. Providing research information makes the paper more profound. Also it moves the paper in a powerful direction. The difference between scholarly and popular documents is that scholarly documents are written by legit authors, educated scholars or experts, whereas, popular documents are mostly unsigned and are written by journalist or staff. Scholarly documents is the best way to go; they contain genuine bibliography and references. On the other hand, popular does not contain bibliography nor reference. Having good research can lead to a well written paper with cited sources.

In another lifetime ago I once worked under a Surgeon. Often times he would ask us questions regarding medicine. If we did not know the question, he would tell us to research it. That is when I found out that there are two types of sources. One is a reliable source a scholarly source and a popular source. Scholarly sources are more reliable and are professional done to give the utmost correct information. Popular sources such as Wikipedia can be done by anyone, with no credentials so there is no reliability to it. Also learning about the types of sources that we have access to as students at CoA is amazing. We are able to look through many different types of scholarly catalogs even at school.

Today at the library orientation, the speaker talked about the vast resources the college website has. Clicking on the library tab will open up a list of links, some of which will give students access to article databases. This particular resource is very beneficial for students who are planning to do research and writing papers. Another thing I learned about was the difference between scholar and popular periodicals. Scholars are written by accomplished people with outstanding credentials such as a Ph.D or a highly regarded University. It usually consists of journals that are peer reviewed by other experts before approval and it also has a bibliography. The popular periodicals consist of newspapers or magazines. They are also brief, containing only 1-5 pages. Overall, today's lecture was educational, I now have this option to turn to when I'm writing essays or conducting my own research. I also believe the resources that the college offers is reliable and dependable. It serves to help students use and credit plausible works that can be implemented into their own writing.

We use research in our papers to prove our point. Researching on your topic helps you have information to back up what you are saying. That's why it is important to know the difference between popular and scholarly. The difference between the two is that scholarly documents are published by universities and popular documents are from commercial publishers. Magazines and news paper articles are considered popular documents while journals from professors and researchers are scholarly. It is better to use and cite scholarly documents in your paper.

Research is important in college level essays. Here we are involved in subjects that are important and we assign details to our writings. A piece of writing does need to be research oriented. An issue cannot be just addressed by oneself in its utmost details. And so doing research to write essays are important .
When we use materials for our research it is important to analyze the source. As we discussed the sources can be scholarly and popular. And saying that, scholarly sources should be the only one used in doing research to get credible information. The popular sources are incredible and are just mere delusional sometime. So it is very important for students to classify their sources for a good writing.

Most importantly, in researching topics that are peer-reviewed is a matter of health. When an article has been published or someone makes a claim that is unproven or has not been subjectively reviewed there is the chance that it may be false. As is the case with many pseudo-sciences, there are chances of someone maybe taking to heart the exact nature of the claim. The claim might not even be that serious , made jokingly or made in reference to something totally off track of what the believer may be seeing it as. On the one hand the person following the false advice may be getting their self into trouble and danger, such as believing in a miracle cure or ideology. On the other hand the person making the claim is being saved from having to deal with the follower not getiing or becoming fixed and somehow blaming the person making the claim for the original malady. It is sometimes difficult for me to follow a structured pattern in my whimsical and free for all ways but I have been learning myself to trust the system for what it is and the usefulness in its control of freak mishaps.

During the library orientation, I learned how to search the Peralta interface for books and articles. I also learned what articles were the correct format to use. Magazine articles are popular text. Most newspaper articles are also considered those of the popular format. It's better to use scholar articles because they've been reviewed by the academic society and are written by professionals.

People can benefit from including research in their writing for numerous reasons. If they are submitting a paper that includes research that backs up their own point of view, it makes their writing a lot more convincing. Having legitimacy from primary sources, journals, and research can make the writer’s paper more justifiable. An author can even get more recognition from citing scholars and researchers. That’s what differentiates scholarly papers from popular. Popular authors tend to be journalists and staff writers that give out more entertaining information towards the general public. Scholarly authors want to write to other scholars and researchers about certain studies and reviews of scholarly research.
