Cyber-Assignment and Book Report Essay Writing Workshop

In the peer reviews for the 1-3 p.m. class, we all read the essays together. Only four students had their homework, so he or she got feedback from eight classmates.

We talked for a bit about They Say, especially "showing why we should care" and then we used the Active Reading guidelines in Hacker to structure our peer reviews. We read 4 essays in 30 minutes and spent the balance of the class sharing feedback.

I am really proud of the students who shared their work and were able to take the feedback, much of which was constructive but not always glowing--bravo! We will do this again, if you like with the SE essay, which is due May 8 (fast draft) and May 13 (final draft).

For Wednesday, write another draft with a Revision Goals Plan addressing all the comments in the narrative. Be detailed. If it would make it easier, write a summary of all the comments, person by person, and then complete the Goals  (Hacker 45).

Bring the essay to class and if we have time, we will run through the essays again. Everyone would need to email me the second drafts and I can get them printed for you if we see there is time.

The final drafts are due by Friday at 12 noon. Notice the extension (smile).

We didn't get to cite the song. Here are the details from the jacket. Here is the information you need for a Works Cited page for the freewrite. Look in Hacker 59 page 515.

Grateful Thoughts

IN class today we listen to a song titled “Grateful” by Victoria Theodore. Theodore is form the bay area. Her lyrics talk about the pettiness that fills the everyday moments of most people in today’s society. She sings about how she was complaining about her hair and some other examples of meaningless complaints.
Her songs overall theme is one of gratefulness, hence the title. To me what it’s seemed he artist was trying to convey was an overall gratefulness for the life she has. While this particular genre of music may not be appealing to everyone, the lyrics are easy enough to understand as well as the overall message.
In the refrain of the song Mr. Theodore makes very clear what she is singing about when she sings, “Grateful to be alive.” I agree with the main theme of Ms. Theodore’s song. I believe it is important to keep in the forefront of our thoughts the gifts we have been given. To me this song is one way that Ms. Theodore chooses to do this.

“Grateful”. By Victoria Theodore. Kiqomedia/ Orange Honey Muffin Music. 2012. CD-ROM.
