Grade Justification
What grade do you think you've earned this semester? What evidence supports this conclusion?

1. Portfolio Essay 1 Reflection on COA Fall 2013, Professor Sabir’s English Class_______

The narrative will look at the theme this semester: Rebellion or Resistance and Social Change Agents who recognize a problem and fight for its resolution through the three essays: Rosa Parks, Book Report and Social Entrepreneur Profile. In 50 Essays and the earlier essays by Frederick Douglass, Sherman Alexie, Malcolm X, and Helen Keller we also explored similar topics.

What have you learned about yourself this semester? What have you learned about the discipline you are studying here: reading and writing that you plan to carry forth into your lifelong pursuit of learning.

We shared this essay last week in a Finals Salon. ___________ (check here if present)The essay shared in the Finals Salon can take the place of Essay 1 here. You do not have to write another essay.

2. Portfolio Essay 2 Reflection on revision process__________________

Look at the writing process and what you have been learning about yourself as a writer. Take two essays and talk about the planning, research and revision strategies you used. It helps to choose an early paper and compare to a later paper. Often you can more easily see the differences in your writing and a better example of mastery of certain concepts. Look at the role grammar plays in the writing process. Include here a discussion of your two MCE scores.

Also discuss skills you need to improve and how you plan to address that.

Include The Write Course Video: "Revision Strategies," the two chapters from Writing with a Thesis,  Diana Hacker's Rules for Writing, and They Say, I Say, in your bibliography. Site at least two of these sources in your analysis of your revision process. Also cite your essay(s) used as examples in this second essay. This is a scholarly essay and it does count. There are cyber-assignments connected to the Write Course video and the Writing with a Thesis chapters, not to mention your responses to me re: the MCE. Use this writing where appropriate to write this second essay.

Additional narrative considerations for the portfolio essay:

The second essay has students look at the writing process and discuss their own writing process: the topics chosen, the information used, revision strategies, writing as a process. This should include a definition of the difference between editing and revising and a value statement on the place for both in composition.

I am really interested in discourse about audience and how that shapes or determines how the writer approaches her topic.

I am also interested in discussion of the revision process, and whether or not seeing writing as a work in progress or a draft, liberates or stagnates the creative process. (Students are to use examples from their writing to illustrate these points.)

I'd also like students to think about and give at three specific ways how they have grown as writers and thinkers this semester. Essay 1 is about 250 words. Essay 2 will probably be a bit longer (500-750 words) since you are citing your essays and scholarly sources.

Give your essays a title.

Essay 3 Due Dates Revised

Essay 3 is due for peer review today, Tuesday, November 26, 2013. The final draft is due into me via email by 12 noon Tuesday, December 3. Grades are final. make sure the MLA for the academic essay, in-text citations, works cited and bibliography are perfect.

Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, we will meet in A-205 for another peer review with Microsoft Comment. We learned today how to change the colors for each reader.

Review the rubric for the course and make sure that grammatical errors, including spelling errors are minimal. If they overwhelm the paper, your grade will suffer. We have a Writing Center where tutors will give students assistance. If you have never visited L-231, now is the time.

We reviewed these areas:

From They Say

Metacommentary
Tone--author's voice
Naysayer
Multiple Perspectives
Quotation Sandwiches
Signal Phrases
So What? Who Cares? Creating empathy for the topic

Initial Planning Sheet
Outline
Evidence
Purpose

3-Part Thesis
Organization

Rules for Writers
Pages 83 and 36-37

Students also added three areas they wanted classmates to read for.

It goes without saying that we emphasize what is working well.

The class portfolio is due the day of the final. These dates vary per class. On the day of the final students will present there research on Rebels.

What is a rebel?

Students will use the three essays beginning with Rosa Parks and ending with your Social Entrepreneur to illustrate your definition.

I suggest students make a poster presentation, that is, divide a folding board into three parts where each aspect of your Rebel presentation is outlined and your essays highlighted with visuals. I have examples of poster presentations I can show you.

I plan to videotape these presentations for scholarly research and documentation.

Later today, I will post the portfolio checklist for this semester. Students will also get a paper copy. The checklist can serve as the table of contents for the portfolio which is due the last day the week of finals: Friday, December 13 by 8 a.m. My grades are also due this day. If the portfolio is late or turned in incorrectly, you will fail the course.

I will not have time to call students or return the portfolio for those who have not submitted the work correctly. Make sure you come to class this week and next week to practice and assemble your portfolio.

Make an appointment. I am around a lot during the week.

Notes 2

Here are notes from the board today re: 3-part thesis sentences

Although chronic homelessness is a huge problem in major cities in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mimi Silbert's Delancey Street Foundation tirelessly addresses this need daily, because she believes rehabilitation is real or possible for everyone given the right tools.

Although Mrs. Rosa Parks is primarily known for her refusal to release her seat on a Montgomery bus in 1955, a recent political biography shows us a Parks virtually unknown in popular culture, because (according to scholar and author Jeanne Theoharis, on Parks's 100th anniversary year) the fictitious veil seems to be fastened with super glue.
