Homework for Monday: Complete the SE essay. We will have a peer review using Hacker "Guidelines for Analyzing a Text (83).

Make sure you define your terms and follow the outline closely. Use Topical Invention sentences as evidence. Identify your entrepreneur's venture or industry. Mimi Silbert's is rehabilitation; Muhammad Yunus's is banking.

Next week we will also talk a bit on portfolio assembly. Please try to make the workshop Monday, December 10, 2012 between 9-12 and 1-3 (A-205). Bring all of your work electronically.

Re: the MCE 1 and 2, students will have a section in the portfolio for the reflective narrative. The question is: How does grammar impact the writing process?

Some students have not decided on their SE. Make sure you get the person cleared before starting the paper. This paper demonstrates your mastery as a researcher and a writer, so to have it receive a poor grade because it was not the assignment. It is your final.

Today we completed the second Multiple Choice Exam. Students are to bring in the MCE 1 results--a narrative emailed to me about 13 weeks ago. Tomorrow we will spend about 10 minutes composing a reflection comparing the two results with a plan. Students who scored in the high 40s were applauded. Several told me they'd like an A in the course as a grand prize (smile). I told the three students in the 11-11:50 a.m. class to see me. We might be able to arrange that (smile).

Homework was to write a fast draft of the SE essay. We will share introductory paragraphs and concluding paragraphs, outlines and MLA for sources (5). Students who missed the exam can make it up tomorrow from 9-9:40 a.m. Another option is 12-12:40 p.m. (A-202).

Monday we will have a proper peer review. Peers will read the introduction again, topic sentences and the conclusion to measure the essays coherence and organization. If any student wants me to read their Social Entrepreneur essay prior to its submission with the portfolio which is due Dec.14-18 at 12 noon, I will make myself available finals week on Monday, Dec. 10 from 9-12 and 1-3.

The plan is to be in A-202; I will confirm this. I can also look at essays next week during my regular office hours.

I will give students a Portfolio Checklist on Monday and we will work on Portfolio Essays perhaps on Tuesday-Wednesday. You will not be able to complete the essays, but you can start them.

When you get your graded essays back from me, start your revisions. Sometimes it takes more than one try to get the paper right. Make sure you understand my comments and marks before leaving class. If you get stuck, I can pull it up on my computer and go over it with you.

Abolitionist

Kailash Satyarthi

Projects: Global March Against Child Labor, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), South Asian Coalition on Child Servitude (SACCS), Rugmark

Locations: New Delhi, India (headquarters), partners in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
Kailash Satyarthi has saved tens of thousands of lives. At the age of 26 he gave up a promising career as an electrical engineer and dedicated his life to helping the millions of children in India who are forced into slavery by powerful and corrupt business- and land-owners. His original idea was daring and dangerous. He decided to mount raids on factories — factories frequently manned by armed guards — where children and often entire families were held captive as bonded workers.

After successfully freeing and rehabilitating thousands of children, he went on to build up a global movement against child labor. Today Kailash heads up the Global March Against Child Labor, a conglomeration of 2000 social-purpose organizations and trade unions in 140 countries.

Yet even as he has become a globally recognized figure, Kailash continues the gritty work of leading raids to free slaves. Kailash believes that he must focus on a range of activities -- from the most grassroots to the most visionary -- in order to win the fight.

Today in the 11 AM class we used Kailash Satyarthi's story to practice the 3-part thesis and topical invention. Our topic was slavery. Again, homework is to complete your research on the social entrepreneur and come to class ready to write.
Today we concluded presentations in the 8 AM class. Homework is to continue working on your social entrepreneur essays. Monday we will perhaps write a fast draft after speaking about certain aspects one should include in the essay.

Antoinette Armour, Virginia Tan, Makonnen Richardson, and Gabe Shalaby presented. If Remy wants to present Monday she can; you can as well as Tracci.

Check your mailboxes for grades. I will be sending them to everyone. If you do not get a grade from me on all your essays, this means I did not get the essays. Next week we will spend class time on revisions.

New SE essay due date is Thursday, Nov. 29 for peer review. We will conclude with final references to They Say--acknowledging the controversy or naysayers, developing empathy and the meta-commentary.

Have a good holiday. Do not forget to post your self-reflection presenters and audience, post comments. Email the essays to me today if you presented.

Many essays I am reading have sloppy MLA. Remember, this class is a class where you learn to document your sources. Everyone in the class technically knows how to write an essay--this class is more practice doing so. Use Hacker to check that your MLA is perfect, especially the Works Cited page and the Bibliography.  For the Afeni Essay, one had to use "qtd. in Guy" for the in-text citations. See Hacker for the specifics 59a:23 page 488 (Seventh Edition). If you are still unclear about quotes within quotes see page 646 in the Index "Quotation marks, 326-32 . . ." and Quotations further down the page.

Book Report Presentations

Today we started the book report presentations. Congratulations to students who were prepared and presented, especially, Bianca in the 11 AM class. Now you are finished and you can relax and enjoy the rest of the presentations over the next two days (11-11:50 class).

Post reflections on the presenters' work. Comment on what worked well. Presenters, post a self-reflection. What worked well, and what you learned that will help you going forward?

In the 11 a.m. class we watched the New Heroes Episode on Muhammad Yunus. Students were also given time to start developing their 5 source list for the Social Entrepreneur essay. Check the assignment sheet for clarification.

Students were also asked to complete the IPS and the outline. The outline answers the same questions posed in the Frontline World assignment. We will do this Thursday, Nov. 15.

Email your essays to me after you present. Include the abstract, your self-reflection and any comments. I thought you might want to keep them, just in case the presentation clarifies something you might want to fix in the essay before submission. The essay is not the presentation.

Muhammad Yunus, Social Entrepreneur; Book Report Assignment

Monday we read an article in Ode Magazine (2006) about Muhammad Yunus, banker, Noble Peace Prize Laurette and creator of microcredit. The article is a model for your social entrepreneur essay. Here it is on-line: http://odewire.com/53697/turning-poverty-into-peace.html

Assignments
1. Complete your books.

2. Write your essay.

3. Find your Social Entrepreneur. Start developing a source list and then start reading and becoming an expert on your topic. Some of you have chosen to read a book about your SE which means all you need is 4 more sources. We will continue practice documentation next week and the weeks to follow.

Look at the section on research in Hacker.

4. Prepare to present your essays for the book report next week beginning Tuesday. The only essay due is the book report essay.

You will not read your essay. Prepare an abstract for the class. Bring in copies for everyone. If you do not have an abstract, you will not be able to present. If you are going to do a PowerPoint presentation, make sure it is rehearsed. The presentation should be between 3-5 minutes.

Posters are fine. Also, bring your book. If you have kindle bring in a photo of your book and your author. If the book has been adapted for the screen, you can show us a clip.

You are defending your argument, so have one (smile).

Review your errors on the first three essays, so you do not make the same ones on the next essay.

Abstracts:

An abstract is a brief summary of the key points in your essay.  It contains your argument and the evidence you will use to prove your thesis.

Post it here, along with your Initial Planning Sheet by next Tuesday morning as well.

Bring the Book Report Essay abstract to class on Tuesday. Make sure you have enough copies for everyone. Students will not be able to present without an abstract. After each presentation, students will respond to each other's essays with comments. You will write them on the abstract and give them to the presenter. We will present in the classroom (A-202 & C-113) on Tuesday-Wednesday next week. If you have a PowerPoint presentation bring a laptop.

Don't forget to VOTE!
