Book Report Essay Presentations

Today in English 1A 9-9:50 students showed up for the presentations without enough copies of their abstracts for the entire class.

Look at this as if it were a job and the abstract is your resume. Normally you would not get a chance to go home and return later with the completed application--that window is just closed. Today we were going to complete half the presentations with the second half on Wednesday. Now we have just 50 minutes for everyone. Come with the abstracts in your hands. When you walk into the room, put one on each desk.

Students just have 2-3 minutes each to present. Bring the book or a photo of the book cover and/or your subject or character who exemplifies happiness.

Reflections

Wednesday, May 2, 2013, homework will be to write a self-reflection on the presentation. Talk about what works and what didn't work.

Write your responses on the abstract or another sheet of paper and attach it.

1. For each presentation identify at least one rhetorical move along with a critique of the presenter's argument.

2. How does the presenter make us care about his or her subject?

3. How well was the argument articulated?

4. How did the presenter use evidence to prove his or her claim?

5. What questions do you have for the writer?

6. Were there any areas of the presentation that you would like more information on?

Cyber-Assignment and Book Report Essay Writing Workshop

In the peer reviews for the 1-3 p.m. class, we all read the essays together. Only four students had their homework, so he or she got feedback from eight classmates.

We talked for a bit about They Say, especially "showing why we should care" and then we used the Active Reading guidelines in Hacker to structure our peer reviews. We read 4 essays in 30 minutes and spent the balance of the class sharing feedback.

I am really proud of the students who shared their work and were able to take the feedback, much of which was constructive but not always glowing--bravo! We will do this again, if you like with the SE essay, which is due May 8 (fast draft) and May 13 (final draft).

For Wednesday, write another draft with a Revision Goals Plan addressing all the comments in the narrative. Be detailed. If it would make it easier, write a summary of all the comments, person by person, and then complete the Goals  (Hacker 45).

Bring the essay to class and if we have time, we will run through the essays again. Everyone would need to email me the second drafts and I can get them printed for you if we see there is time.

The final drafts are due by Friday at 12 noon. Notice the extension (smile).

We didn't get to cite the song. Here are the details from the jacket. Here is the information you need for a Works Cited page for the freewrite. Look in Hacker 59 page 515.

Title of CD: Grateful
Composer and performer: Victoria Theodore
Publisher: Kiqomedia/ Orange Honey Muffin Music
Year: 2012

Grateful

1. Today we listened to the title track of Victoria Theodore's CD, Grateful. Students are to respond to her song in a 3-paragraph essay. Include a citation in each paragraph. Also include a works cited page. We will do this together.

2. Students completed a MLA worksheet, Exercise 55-3 Identifying elements of sources.

3. Peer Reviews in a Writing Workshop format.

The Book Report Essay

Tomorrow in the 9-9:50 a.m. class the presentations start. Bring in abstracts for each person in class (about 25 copies). You can put multiple copies on one page and then cut the paper into strips. Again, an abstract is a short summary of your key ideas.

The presentation is short, 2-3 minutes. Bring your book. You cannot read your paper. Students will respond on your abstract in writing and then respond on the blog. Each presenter will also have to give a self-evaluation of how they did. That will be homework for class each day we present.

In class students who came prepared responded in writing and verbally to each other. I then sat with the group: Alex, Isreal and Leah with Miguel and we talked about the essays.

Do not worry if you missed the peer review. I will give you another opportunity to make up this session on Thursday. Remember, the essay portfolios are due Thursday, May 2 by 12 noon unless other arrangements have been made.

Portfolio:

1. Final Draft

2. Summary of Peer Review

3. Revision Goals Narrative

4. IPS

5. Outline

6. Related Cyber-Assignments, including They Say.

Planting the Naysayer Freewrite Cyber-Assignment

We looked at alternative viewpoints in class Wednesday and Thursday. In both the 9-9:50 and 4-5:50 classes we reviewed They Say, Exercises 1 and 2 (pp. 90-91).

Students shared the sentences they developed and then looked at THP essay and highlighted in yellow those areas where they responded to other viewpoints. If there were none, students then wrote such a position into their essays.

Post your responses to the exercises here. Give the context for the response to both Exercise 1 and 2.

In the 9-9:50 class we talked about the qualities of Good Writing and how the moves we have been practicing in They Say, especially the one where we entertain objections to our arguments (Planting the Naysayer) strengthens the writing.

From the board today:

Good Writing is: clear, unbiased and opens doors to productive discourse or conversation; that it is respectful of other opinions, opens lines and channels to conversations and other doors to alternative viewpoints.

9-9:50 Recap and A Note to All Students

Today in class we continued with the peer reviews of the BRE Fast Draft, IPS and Outline. Students also need to develop there bibliography.

To pass this class, students need to be able to document their research accurately.

After students shared, I looked at introductory paragraphs, esp. thesis sentences, IPS and some outlines. We then shifted to the SE assignment. Many students still have not had their research approved.

I think most students have as of today have gotten their research approved. If you are one of the few who have not had your SE approved, make sure you let me know, so you can start developing your bibliography and research strategy (see Hacker).

In They Say, for the SE we will look at templates from chapters: 4, 5, 6 and 7. Use templates from these chapters as well or a variation in the final essay.

For the Book Report Essay make sure you review chapters: 1-3, 4-6 in They Say.  If there is anything you are unclear on, now is the time to ask.

Students should know how to paraphrase, summarize, set up an essay using MLA, use ellipsis marks, cite properly in-text, edit out: comma splices, run-on sentences, subject-verb agreement errors, vague pronoun references, verb tense errors. Students should know that when discussing the world of the book, to use present tense verbs; to give the complete name of the author and then use the last name.

Students should also know that in scholarly writing, students are to use first and third person, not second person and the use of contractions is also not allowed. Spell out numbers 1-10. (Added April 25, 2013).

If you are having trouble, you should talk to me. If there are assignments you have not had returned, talk to me after class. This is college, which means students are self-starters, but I am here M-Th. Tuesday, the day of this writing, I left the college at 10 p.m. I got here at 9 a.m.

My office hours are like the doctors, on call. Everyone has my phone number. If you do not, ask me for it again. Call me if I am not in my office D-219. I am more often in A-205 where the computers are faster (smile).

I am not doing the SE research for you. You cannot pick my brain. At this point in your career, part of the assignment is searching for a SE. Take the Library Research Sheet and use it to identify a few persons who fit the criterion for the assignment, ask for my approval and then do a literature search to see if there is enough material on the person to conduct research. Chose the person with the most documented information.

Many students have not developed a research calendar for their assignments (SE) specifically. We only have three weeks of class left. Finals Week is the week of May 20-24.

Exam schedule:

9-9:50 -- May 22, 8-10 AM
1-2:50 -- May 22, 12-2 PM
4-5:50-- May 22, 2-4 PM

I am going to reserve the F-Bldg. I will let you know where specifically.

Portfolios due by Friday, May 24, 12 noon via email: coasabirenglish1A@gmail.com

I will host portfolio assembly workshops the week of finals Tuesday, May 21 9-12; 1-3 in A-205.Everyone is invited to attend.

Earth Day Poem

Si No Hablamos

                        Si no hablamos para alabar a la Tierra,
                es mejor que guardemos silencio.

                        Loa al aire
                     que llena el fuelle del pulmón
                  y alimenta la sangre del corazón;
                       que lleva la luz,
                       el olor de las flores y los mares,
                      los cantos de las aves y el aullido del viento;
                que conspira con la distancia
                   para hacer azul el monte

                       Loa al fuego
                    que alumbra el día y calienta la noche,
                cuece nuestro alimento y da ímpetu a nuestra voluntad;
                  que es el corazón de la Tierra, este fragmento de lucero;
                       que quema y purifica por bien o por mal.

                        Loa al agua
                     que hace a los ríos y a los mares;
                      que da sustancia a la nube y a nosotros;
                        que hace verde a los bosques y los campos;
                      que hincha al fruto y envientra nuestro nacer.

                  Loa a la tierra
                que es el suelo, la montaña, y las piedras;
                     que lleva los bosques y es la arena del desierto;
                       que nos forma los huesos y sala los mares, la sangre;
                   que es nuestro hogar y sitio.

                   Si no hablamos en alabanza a la Tierra,
                        si no cantamos en festejo a la vida,
                                    es mejor que guardemos silencio.

If We Do Not Speak

                        If we do not speak to praise the Earth,
                it is best we keep silent.

                      Praise air
                      that fills the bellow of the lung;
                     feeds our heart's blood;
                      that carries light,
                     the smell of flowers; the seas,
                        the songs of birds; the wind's howl;
                   that conspires with distance
                    to make the mountains blue.

                     Praise fire
                     that lights the day; warms the night,
                  cooks our food; gives motion to our wills;
                     that is the heart of Earth, this fragment of a star;
                    that burns; purifies for good or ill.

                  Praise water
                    that makes the rivers; the seas;
                       that gives substance to the clouds and us;
                      that makes green the forests; the fields;
                      that swells the fruit; wombs our birth.

                        Praise earth
                    that is the ground, the mountain; the stones;
                that holds the forests; is the desert sand;
                    that builds our bones; salts the seas, the blood;
                      that is our home; place.

                       If we do not speak in praise of the Earth,
                              if we do not sing in celebration of life,
                                       it is best we keep silence.

Today in class we reviewed the Ode article on Muhammad Yunus. Students were to complete it for Monday. We will watch a New Heroes video on him Monday as well in the 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. classes. The other classes have seen it.

Here is a link to the article: http://odewire.com/53697/turning-poverty-into-peace.html This article is a model for how to approach your social entrepreneur essay assignment.

Other homework is to bring in your bibliographies for the book report essay in the 9 a.m. class. The other classes should bring in the IPS and if you have completed the book an outline and an introductory paragraph.

We also reviewed two students essays from Writing with a Thesis, from a handout I gave students months ago. One of the two essays is a summary, the other is an essay. We discussed the reasons. If you cannot find your copy and would like this handout, see me Monday.

I also showed students copies of another handout I gave you many months ago from the authors of Stewart Pidd. This handout helps students learn how to paraphrase and summarize. If you want to go over this with me when I am on campus, you can. Let me know.

Today in the English 1A, 9-9:50 a.m. class, students wrote or started their 3-part essay based on the episode from New Heroes on Inderjit Khurana. Students were asked to use templates from They Say. If you do not have They Say, borrow a copy. This is the assignment.

Email your freewrite to me. Include the assignment in the signal phrase.

Homework is to look at the section in Hacker: Conducting Research (pp. 420-456, Sections 53, 54, 55). We will continue in all classes with the Hacker worksheets and look at the section in Hacker on argument in the next few meetings.

Monday, April 15, 2013

The 9-9:50 class was canceled, but students were encouraged to take advance of time to catch up (smile).

Both afternoon classes watched a New Heroes episode on Inderjit Khurana. In the 1-2:50 p.m. class we wrote an introductory paragraph together on the last episode we watched on Tete and Coopa-Roca in Brazil.

Students were to write a 3-paragraph essay using the They Say templates where applicable. I gave students new language: thesis, antithesis, synthesis.

Thesis references agreement or the pro-argument; the antithesis references the counterargument or disagreement (planting the naysayer); the final paragraph in this practice essay is the synthesis or the place where we can agree and disagree simultaneously.

See They Say chapters 4 (pp. 55-67) and 6 (pp. 64-66).

Students were encouraged to email their short essays to: coasabirenglish1A@gmail.com It doesn't matter if they are finished. Keep the freewrite for the SE portfolio.

Homework: Keep reading your books. Complete the Frontline World Assignment and post it. Decide who you'd like to profile for the final essay. The person has to be approved first before you start the research process.

Sample Introductory Paragraph:

                    From destitute to design Maria Teresa Leal has led many women from poverty to economic independence through utilization of local creative resources.  Coopa-Roca or the coop Tete started in Rocinha, the largest slum in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, provides women who are seamstresses and fashion designers an opportunity to support their families, keep their children safe and expand their businesses. Tete began visiting the favelas and purchasing items from the craftswomen there 20 years ago, while a university student.  These fashionable pieces were noticed by her peers, yet none wanted to join her on her excursions, so Tete decided to take the fashion to these hesitant consumers and potential customers. Although poor single mothers are not what comes to mind when looking at Haute couture or exclusive high fashion design, Coopa-Roca expands this notion as it lifts a disenfranchised element of Brazilian society out of poverty. Tete says "at first the co-op's biggest challenge was finding outlets for [its] projects. [However,] [i]n the early 90s Tete attracted interest from Rio's fashion world, and in 1994 Coopa-Roca began producing clothes for the catwalk. In order to acquire the luxurious fabrics for high-quality designer clothes, Tete sought out donations. She also convinced fashion deisngers to teach the women about production skills and trends" (pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/p_leal.html)

Thursday, April 11, 2013

In the 9-9:50 class, we reviewed the last two essay assignments. Homework is to read your book, complete the Frontline World Cyber-Assignment, start thinking about SE (see Library Worksheet), complete yesterday's homework re: New Heroes and They Say: Chapter 4.

Read chapter 6 in They Say as well. All of this is old homework posted below and given to students today.

Class Meeting Location

I told the 1-2:50 p.m. class we'd meet in the lab, but on second thought, we will continue to meet in D-205 for the duration of class. If we need technology, I will use the projector. Hopefully it will work (smile).

Homework recap for the 1-2:50 p.m. class:

Read Chapter Six: "Skeptics May Object" (78). As you read your book for the next essay, think about how your author addresses skeptics. Where specifically in the text does s/he acknowledge these opposing viewpoints? Does the author use any of the moves articulated by Graff and Birkenstein?

In class today for the 1-2:50 class we reviewed all of the assignments coming up and then watched a New Heroes program about Coopa-Roca .

As I was looking at the website, I noticed the following link. All the links are not live, but quite a few are. Use this resource to find social entrepreneurs who might interest you. There is also information here on some of the entrepreneurs profiled in the programs: http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/whatis/resources.html

We wanted to watch the program on Albina Ruiz, whose business in Lima, Peru, finds environmentally friendly ways to rid communities of solid waste. See http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/ruiz.html

There are other great resources here like the interview with an entrepreneur who talk about the difference between a social entrepreneur and an entrepreneur: http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/

Social Entrepreneur Essay

Worksheet for Assignment--Social Entrepreneurs: Engaged Citizenry

1. How to start:

Students need to explore the terms, entrepreneur, engaged citizenry, business, social good to grasp fully what it meant by the term: social entrepreneur. Another related, but different term is philanthropy. An entrepreneur is not necessarily a philanthropist. You need to know the difference and do not choose a philanthropist.

2.  Identifying the person to profile

This semester we are looking at a person whose happiness is connected to service.  Identify a business person who exemplifies this concept.

The person has to be documented, which means she cannot be new to this field. The person profiled cannot be you (smile) unless you meet all the criteria and present a convincing argument to me first (smile). I used to say the person couldn't be related to you, but that's okay as long as the other criteria is met.

The entrepreneur needs to live in Northern California and be alive. I suggest students get the person approved as soon as possible so if you plan to interview the person, you have time to get on their calendar. Interviews are great as one of the sources cited in the essay. You need 3 or two others.

3. The Essay

Introduction

Open with the problem statement. Be descriptive. Connect the solution to the problem and the organizational work to happiness for both the entrepreneur and the people involved, that is, the community partners and target population.

The thesis sentence names your social entrepreneur as a "happy" person who is addressing the problem identified in the introduction (which is the reason why they are happy).

Define what you mean by happiness in the essay, if not in the introduction, then somewhere near the beginning of the discourse, so we will know what you mean when you say "happiness."

Body paragraphs

Background on the social entrepreneur and what brings them to the work. You can cite statistics here to illustrate the problem.

Introduce the organization or business venture. Does the work grow out of the community?

How do the SE and the community interact?

Are there any partnerships with other organizations and/or government?

Are there any peer reviews or industry reports?

Conclusion

What are the measurable results for the community? Share a story here.

What are the measurable results for the SE. You could quote the SE here.

Your essay needs to answer all of these questions; you can structure it like a typical problem/solution essay or cause and effect.

Notes:

The person has to be alive. Try to find someone local, who is living in the San Francisco Bay Area or in California. The person has to have been doing this work for 10-20 years (the length of time is negotiable; see me).

Research

1. You need to locate 5 sources on your subject to form a bibliography; you don't have to cite them all. The sources can be published or broadcast interviews, books, articles, and films or you can interview them yourself. You can work in groups and share data. In fact, I encourage it.

2. You will have three citations: 1 in-text citation, one paraphrase, and one block quote in the essay. The rest of the writing has to be your own. The essay should be about 4 pages.

This does not include the works cited page or bibliography.

This paper is your final.

Book Report Essay Assignment

This semester we are looking at the theme Happiness

Each student was asked to choose a book by or about a happy person. Hopefully students have begun to read their books.

For each essay, students need to find three articles: a published book review or analysis, and for the author, see if there is something on the author in Literary Criticism, (on-line in the Library Database and in COA library (public libraries as well). Third, find an article that addresses one of the themes in the book. Include all of these sources in your works cited/bibliography page.

The essay will be 2-3 pages and in it you will summarize your book’s major themes and analyze them. If your author is the person you are profiling, talk about the person’s life and how it defines our topic, happiness. If the book is a biography, feel free to tell us something about the author and how he or she comes to know the person he or she writes about. (Avoid plot summaries.)

Abstract
The presentation is weighted heavily here, so prepare well, and please include an abstract which includes the title of the book, the key points you plan to make and any arguments you’d like us to consider. Bring in copies for each student. If a student does not have an abstract, he or she will not present. There are no make ups.

Respond to all my points listed above and you will be fine. If you want to more information see:

The New Heroes

Today in class we are looking at one of the persons profiled in the New Heroes series, Kailash Satyarthi, http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/satyarthi.html or or Maria Teresa Leal, http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/leal.html

We reviewed the questions posted students are to answer in the Frontline World assignment. I also gave students a paper copy. If you did not get a copy, ask me for one.

In a freewrite students were asked to respond to the program using the They Say templates (min. 3) from "Chapter Four: Yes, No Okay, But" (55) in a three paragraph essay with citations.

For the past week we have been revising the essay based on a topic taken from THP. I have been encouraged by many of the scholarly takes on Gretchen Rubin book. The essays are due in class on Monday, April 8, 2013.

For all classes except the 9-9:50 class, we will assemble the essay portfolio together. For teh 9-9:50 class, I want you to assemble it at home and bring camera ready or ready to email to me.

I will approve the Essay Portfolio first and then ask you to email it to me in class. For the remainder of class on Monday, April 8, 2013, we will share our books we have chosen for the Book Report essay. Bring the book, not a photograph, to class. Be prepared to tell us how it satisfies the assignment. The assignment is to chose a book by or about a happy person.

Lastly, in the MW classes we will talk about the Social Entrepreneur essay and start that research process by watching a short video on a SE.

Today in the 9-9:50 class we ended by talking about Martin King Jr. and his notion of the Beloved Community. I shared the post at the Martin Luther King Center in Georgia. Students then wrote freewrites on the topic. Here is a link to the website that speaks to the topic: http://www.thekingcenter.org/king-philosophy

Please send those comments to me. Right now, the comment section is for members only. I have to add everyone's name to the blog and have not done so yet.

We didn't get to the freewrite. We will write it on Monday, April 8, 2013.

I also mentioned to students an event this evening at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall: East Bay Meditation Center presents: The Dream Never Dies. It is at 7 p.m. The website is http://www.eastbaymeditation.org/

Spring is Here!

For the past two days in all classes we have been reviewing our current essay on THP. In all classes the big peer review is Wednesday. Bring the essay electronically to class with the IPS and outline. Start assembling the Essay Portfolio. Note the last page of the package for the order.

I forgot to include the two articles and their summaries. Put that before the reading logs.

If students need the extra time, you have until Monday, April 8, 2013 to turn in the essay portfolios.

We have almost completed the Hacker exercise package looking at plagiarism. We completed exercises 53-4 and 53-6 over the past two days.

Next week we will continue in They Say and share the books we are reading. Bring them to class on Monday, April 8-10, 2013. If students have not shared their Women's History Month presentation, we will save time for that Wednesday-Thursday, April 3-4, 2013.

For our freewrite tomorrow and Thursday, April 4, 2013, think about what Martin King meant when he talked about the "Beloved Community."
